Public Land Recreation Area

The Public Land Recreation Area (PLRA) is located on the David Thompson Highway (Hwy 11).

Clearwater Trail Initiative - Rig Street Map
The Clearwater Trails Initiative (CTI) is a volunteer synergy group registered with Synergy Alberta and dedicated to providing strong leadership and support in the identification and management of quality trails, which are to be used in a safe and environmentally responsible manner leading to a secure and sustainable multi-use trail system.
Located west of Caroline, off Highway 54, Rig Street is an area utilized by off road vehicles and ATV enthusiasts.

Shunda / Baldy Mountain Lookout Trail
This trail is over six kilometers and is rough and rocky. It also has limited views along the way. Once at the lookout, you’re provided with panoramic views of Nordegg and the surrounding front ranges. Hikers, bikers. and off highway vehicles (OHVs) all frequent this route.

Bighorn Dam Trails
No timing restrictions, access to staging area is located south of Highway 11 at the Bighorn Dam area.

On the Forestry Trunk Road

Canary Creek Trail
A difficult and bumpy 20 kilometer biking, hiking, horseback riding,  and OHV route that begins at the Hummingbird Creek PLRA off the Hummingbird PLRA access road. To start, you must find Onion Creek. From here the route leads through meadows and climbs into the Ram Range.

It ends at a junction where you may continue to either Ram River or along the Hummingbird Creek Trail. July 1 through February 1 is the traveling time for OHVs.July 1 through April 30 for snow vehicles.

Ghost Public Land Use Zones
The Ghost Public Land Use Zones (PLUZ) includes more than 1500 kilometers2 (150,000 hectares) of public land northwest of Calgary and east of the Banff National Park and the Done Getty Wildland Provincial Park. It is managed to protect the environment while allowing responsible and sustainable use of the land.

The PLUZ offers approximately 650 kilometers of trails designated for motorcycle, OHV, and truck use, all of which can also be utilized by non-motorized users.Industrial, commercial, and grazing leaseholders also share the area.The Ghost PLUZ can be accessed from the north or south on the Forestry Trunk Road and from the east on the Coal Camp, Burnt Timber, or Harold Creek Roads.

Check kiosks in the area for maps or visit the Alberta Environment and Parks website for GPS downloads.

Onion Lake Trail
A 33 kilometer biking, hiking, equestrian, and OHV route that begins at the Hummingbird PLRA. It leads along an old road through the Ram Range to Hummingbird Creek. July 1 through February 1 is the traveling time for OHVs. July 1 through April 30 for snow vehicles.
