Speed Reduction

Exciting news for safer streets!

Council has passed Amending Traffic Bylaw 2025/08 which reduces the speed limit to 40 km/h in most areas of Town. Additionally, playground and school zones are now in effect 24/7.

This change follows earlier speed reductions made in the neighbourhoods of Creekside (2020) and McNutt (2024) to improve road safety.

Reducing speed limits on residential streets, downtown and high pedestrian areas makes our streets safer. Slowing down gives people more time to react to the unexpected to prevent crashes and reduces the severity of collisions that do happen.

Speed is a critical component of roadway safety. In a vehicle-pedestrian collision, the pedestrian has a 70% chance of surviving when struck by a vehicle that is travelling at 40 km/h. At a vehicle speed of 50 km/h, the survival rate drops to 15% and continues to drop as vehicle speeds increase.

Motivated by pedestrian safety, this proactive legislation has been put in place to deter speeding within residential areas. Enforcing 40 km/h will see higher fines for those caught choosing 60+ km/h speeds.

The current posted speed limit signage must be followed and adhered to until replaced with the updated signage. Transitioning signage across Town will occur as weather permits. The public will be notified when this transition starts.
