Vandals cause $14,000 in damages

A spate of recent fires has caused $14,000 of damage to park infrastructure.

Between October 8 and 13, parks staff observed excessive littering and fire damage to trash cans near the Skate Park, Helen Hunley Memorial Park and Lou Soppit Community Centre.

After the initial vandalism overnight on October 8 to 9, two of the three damaged bins were replaced. These and others were subsequently destroyed by fire again on October 12 and October 13.

A total of three bear-proof dual trash and recycling receptacles and five large round trash receptacles were destroyed, amounting to $14,000 in damages.

The worst-damaged ones have been removed, but the Town has no more replacements on hand. The bins that have been damaged but are still useable will remain in place.

The wildfire danger during this time ranged from moderate to high, and the Town is grateful that the fires did not spread further to surrounding grounds and buildings.

The RCMP are investigating. If you have any information about the vandalism or fires, please contact the police.
